A Founder of Wesley College he was instrumental in establishing the school. He drowned in the Bay of Biscay, aboard the SS London on his way back to Australia having secured books for the library. He and his wife and all those on board except for 19 who braved the waves in a row boat, drowned when the ship sank during a long and terrible storm on the very day the College was officially opened. The account found in Trove details how in the last 20 hours before succumbing to the sea he saved many souls who turned to him for prayers and comfort.
A scholarship was named in his honour which continues to this day.
