Pyke was the son of Richard, an accountant, and Lillian Pyke, a teacher, journalist and author. He was the youngest of three children having two older sisters, and was educated at Wesley College, Melbourne. His father died when Lardy was 2 years old, and in 1927, on his mother's death, Pyke was orphaned aged 14. In his mother's Will was a request that LA Adamson become his Guardian. Pyke remained at Wesley, excelling at sport and in academics.
He turned to teaching, at first in Scotland and then returned to Melbourne and Wesley College at the start of World War 2. He eventually became the Headmaster of Newington College, Sydney.
NB the spelling of his first name Laurence, although in Adamson's will it is written Lawrence.
