Glen was born in Rabaul New Guinea , the son of a missionary Rev L McArthur, who was head of the George Brown Training College, which later became a recipient of Wesley's charitable fundraising.
He, his brother and mother were evacuated while his father stayed on, becoming a POW and later dying aboard the Montevideo Maru when it sank.
Glen was educated at Prince Alfred College, Adelaide, studied in London and became a successful Principal in Adelaide before coming to Wesley.
He oversaw the introduction of the International Baccalaureate, and expansion of Glen Waverley with the Early Learning Centre, and the opening of the Prep school at St Kilda Road . He was particularly interested in the Arts. The McArthur Music Centre at Elsternwick is named after him. He also engaged fashion designer Prue Acton to recreate the uniform. One of his many challenges was the introduction of notebook computers in 1993.
He became unwell in his last year at Wesley and left at the end of 1996.
