Wesley first joined the other major public schools to play cricket in 1870. Up until then it was played between Melbourne Grammar, Scotch College and Geelong Grammar School. Soon after Xavier, St Patrick's and Geelong College joined to make up the beginnings of the APS group.
The first Captain of Cricket was L Lyons in 1872.
Regulations were drawn up in 1890. Wesley came equal First with Melbourne Grammar and Scotch in 1894. A shared first happened a few times more and it wasn't until 1919 that Wesley came first on its own.
Many great players have attended the school, including Ross Gregory, Keith Rigg, Ian Johnson and Roy Park. PL Williams, former Captain of Cricket when a student at Wesley became coach in the 1930s, and success came more often.
The uniform insignia for being awarded 'Colours' was a gold lion's head badge, on his cap XI in gold, and on the blazer pocket XI in gold.
