About the Prefect system

Prefects were first instituted at Wesley by Headmaster Professor Henry  Andrew MA who was Headmaster from 1876-1881. Rules concerning the Prefects - their appointments, responsibilities and punishments were printed in the Chronicle of November 1879, and reprinted in the First History p 23. Originally there were 10 prefects and 2 house captains, made up of the Sixth Form and if needed the Fifth Form. See also page 36-37 for details on the Office of the Senior Prefect.

During Adamson's time it became the tradition for the Senior Prefect to sing 'The Leaving Song' at the final Speech Day. This is something Harold Holt did as acting Senior Prefect 1926. 

MacNeil changed this to be a progression from senior to probationer to prefect. He limited prefects to six - the Senior Prefect/or School Captain, the vice captain and four House Prefects. 

Prefects also includes the House Captains and sub prefects.
