TitleArch Hoadley CBEAlso Known AsCharles Archibald Brookes HoadleyBiography
Antarctic geologist
CAB (Archie) Hoadley (1901) was a geologist, and worked with Mawson on the Expedition of 1911-14. He hauled a sled 300 miles each way to the active volcano Gaussberg, conducting glacial and geological research. He was a member of the Western Party, led by the famous Frank Wild (who went with Scott and Shackelton). They were deposited on what is now known as the Shackelton Ice Shelf. That part of the coast had only just been mapped by Captain John King Davis as they sailed around from Commonwealth Bay to leave them on the Ice Shelf. Due to the precarious nature of living and working on a floating ice shelf there was a great urgency to get them off before summer ended and the sea ice closed in. The day they left was the day that Mawson returned from his own difficult voyage - and missed them, watching as they sailed away and realising he had to stay for the winter.
This expedition was recorded in Mawson’s own words in the book “Home of the Blizzard”. He offered to be part of the rescue party for Shackleton's men in 1916.
Hoadley was awarded the Polar Medal for his participation in the Expedition, one of many honours he received throughout his lifetime.
He went on to establish the Footscray Institute of Technology - now Victoria University and was very active n the local and global Scout movement, Freemasons, Rotary and Church of England.
