On 7 December 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour, the key American naval base in Hawaii, where the battleships were lined up in a row for the Japanese dive-bombers. It was like a shooting gallery and great devastation occurred.

The Japanese also launched large scale invasions southwards, seizing Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaya, Singapore, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and what is now Indonesia. By 15 February 1942 they were bombing Darwin. Australia threw itself into overdrive.

Army headquarters in Melbourne were the Victoria Barracks in St Kilda Road, and additional accommodation was quickly needed in order to house the burgeoning staff. The simplest way to acquire more office space was to take over nearby institutions. Wesley College, across the road, was told to vacate its premises.

Where would it go! Would it survive, or would it just have to shut down and see its staff and students dispersed?
