TitleJilji in warla country (clay pans) c 2006DescriptionWakartu was born in the Great Sandy Desert in the Karnaminti area, Kimberley Western Australia, but her parents died when she was young, so she was brought to live with other family on a station at Christmas Creek. After working with her husband on a number of stations in the Kimberley she moved to Fitzroy Crossing. This is where she started painting. Painting was a way of telling her story, the places she lived in, the ceremonial body paints and Dreamtime stories.
